About Us

The Self Build Guide is brought to you primarily by myself, James.

My personal passion for self build has developed from a lifelong interest in construction and in particular the idea of fulfilling a dream and building my own home.

Inspired by ambitious DIY projects with my Dad and having witnessed my parents’ house being built when I was young, I finished school and chose to study Construction Management at university, graduating with 1st class honours.

I spent my holidays from uni’ working for a small house building and barn conversion company in the Yorkshire Dales and went on to work in site management for major contractors in the US and UK on large scale mixed use commercial projects before going on to run my own small building business.

Having renovated numerous properties of my own I eventually found a suitable plot and got the opportunity to self build my own home. The experience was every bit as gratifying as I had hoped.

It was with this in mind that I decided to start this website to share my experience and tips from various aspects of the industry to help other Self Builders successfully achieve their dream.

The Self Build Guide includes input from like-minded self builders, renovators and construction professionals, not least my wife, Nina, who shares my passion and despite having a degree in environmental energy engineering, has spent many hours mixing mortar and lugging materials, not to mention enduring some uncomfortable living conditions at times.

It’s all been fun though!......
