Are you interested in building your own website? Would you like to find out how I went from self building a house to self building a website?!

I've always been fascinated with websites, the potential of the Internet and the possibility of building online businesses. It was always something I wanted to get involved in but my career and qualifications had focussed on my interest in construction.
Apart from the usual e-mailing, web browsing, word processing and the odd spreadsheet, I had little in the way of IT experience.
After finishing our self build I decided I wanted to start a website to share my self build experience. I wanted to start a website that would be a useful resource for self builders and renovators and that I would also be able to build into a business.
Luckily, the circumstances were right and I had the opportunity to spend some time researching a way of making it happen.
I wanted to be able to learn online and at my own pace rather than attending formal courses. I invested quite a bit of time researching online web design courses, website building packages, webhosts and sifted through the mountain of get rich quick schemes and empty promises.
Then I came across Sitesell's 'Site Build It (SBI)', which at first appeared to be making even bolder promises than the others!
I read more and realised that they were actually claiming NOT to offer a get rich quick solution.
They felt there was no such thing.
They wanted to help their customers build long-term stability and value in a website that worked. One that first and foremost focussed on the needs of the visitors.
This sounded right up my street but I didn't want to get carried away and decided to try and find some dirt...... I couldn't find any. Only more positive comments and satisfied customers.
To cut a long story short I am now I'm one of those satisfied customers!
From the moment I signed up to SBI I was stunned by the volume and diversity of the information contained in their action guides, the tools available and the support and other resources on offer.
An excellent feature are the forums. SBI'ers (as we are known!...) are encouraged to ask questions and generally share information and tips in the forums. When you've learned more, the idea is to go back and share your new found knowledge with newcomers. 'Giving back' if you like.
It is a mine of information. Whenever I've hit a snag, I've either quickly found an answer or someone has answered it in no time. It's very reassuring to have a vast support network of people across the world with a common interest, facing the same hurdles, achieving the same goals and sharing their collective knowledge.
You can even just post your site on there and ask for feedback and suggestions on how to improve it.
The key to the whole SBI process is following the action guides to the letter and doing as you are told! They tell you what works and how to do it and you just keep moving forward, learning and building your site.
I started my website with the beginner's 'block builder' tool which requires next to no technical expertise. I continued building the site and learning more of the techie and Internet stuff as I went along. Before long I had used SBI's training manuals to learn CSS. I ditched the block-builder and overhauled my entire site into a much more sophisticated and flexible operation.
I've learned countless skills along the way including:
I am even more amazed by the internet than when I started!
I've continued building, following the program and learning as I go and my site continues to go from strength to strength.
The SBI process is now taught as a formal course in over 30 colleges and Universities as a practical way for students to use the web to build a successful online business.
Sitesell claim SBI will exceed your expectations and I must say, it has more than exceeded mine!
